Common Garage Door Issues

Common Garage Door Issues

Garage doors are an integral part of many homes across the South West and allow you to seamlessly use your garage with ease. However, a malfunctioning garage door can be a major inconvenience, not to mention a potential security risk. In this blog, we’ll dive into the most common garage door issues you might face or be facing and how to deal with them.

At Daimond Doors Ltd, we’ve seen it all over 20 years. From odd noises to stubborn garage doors, we’ve got you covered and with our list of common garage door issues we’ll help you understand these problems. This will save you time, hassle and most importantly money.

Trouble Opening or Closing

A garage door that opens or closes slowly or not at all can be quite irritating. In automatic garage doors, a dead battery in your remote or blocked safety sensors are surefire reasons as to why your door is refusing to close/open. Start by checking for obstructions in the path of the door and make sure the photo eyes are clean. Also, check that there aren’t any objects blocking the path of the garage door. Then, check that the sensor is not being obstructed by any objects.

If both of these areas appear fine, then the issue is most likely being caused by either a fault with the door’s limit switch, a broken cable or excessive wear in one of the door’s components. In this case we’d recommend getting in touch with one of our expert garage door engineers to rectify the issue.

Garage door makes noises

Your garage door will make some noise of course due to multiple components helping it move. However, an overly noisy garage door could be an indication that the structures inside your garage door are malfunctioning. Most excessive noise from your garage door will come from lack of lubrication. So sorting this out should just take some well-placed WD40 on the rollers and rails.

If this doesn’t fix the noise issue, then we are more than happy to help. Our team will endeavour to fix the problem by first tightening any loose hardware, then replacing the rollers, if they prove to be worn-out.

Faulty Door Springs

Springs help to move your garage door, so if they’re faulty your door might be slow to open or not open at all. You’ll be able to tell if a faulty spring is the issue because you’ll likely be able to see the spring hanging down. The springs may not always break either, instead becoming stretched out over time. When this happens, you might notice that the door doesn’t stay open or goes up and down slower than it should. As a result, you’ll need to have them replaced to return your garage door to its former glory.

Rusty Garage Door

A build-up of rust can be as a result of a number of potential factors. Environmental elements such as exposure to rain or high humidity levels are often a common culprit. If you’ve found yourself avoiding garage door maintenance, this can often times result in rust occurring. Old paint or a worn away garage door sealant can leave the metals of your garage doors exposed.

Marks and dents in garage doors can weaken the surface and structure of your garage door. If it’s bad enough to need a replacement, you will need to arrange for your door to be repaired by our professional team at Diamond Doors

Lost it’s shape

Garage doors should be rigid and strong, so it’s a concern when yours appears uneven or sagging. This normally comes as a result of one or more of the door elements being worn down over time. Old bearings, cables or springs will need to be replaced. So, if you spot signs of sagging, the best approach is to contact a member of our garage door team.

Discolouration or peeling paint

Garage door discolouration and peeling paint can potentially ruin the aesthetic of your home. Both are signs of ageing or high exposure to rain. Peeling paint can be restored by sanding the affected areas of the door, then reapplying paint or finish. You can either attempt to do this yourself or enlist one of our garage repair specialists to take on the hassle of restoring the garage door for you.

Your garage door is too old

When maintained properly, the average garage door can last 15 years. A few factors like how often you’ve done maintenance on it can effect the length it’ll go without issues. If your door is nearing the 30-year mark, then it’s a good idea to have our team at Diamond Doors Ltd perform maintenance on the door. They’ll alert you to any safety issues they find and also give you a heads-up if they suspect your door will need to be replaced soon.
